
On 13 December [1968] the village at Ban Thateng was under assault by approximately 3 battalions of NVA troops. Raven 42 checked in and several strike flights were sent to Raven 42 and 52 by Hillsboro. Between 13 December and 20 December 1968 1,000 of the 1,200 NVA troops were killed. “As usual, the Ravens and Hillsboro did an outstanding job in stopping the enemy by the use of correct ordinance at the right time.”
On 4 December 1967 Hillsboro flew 13.5 hours and handled 173 sorties of which 94 were strike sorties. Hillsboro arrived on station at 2310Z. Weather in Tally Ho required CSS during the morning hours but cleared sufficiently for visual strikes later in the day. Tiger Hound weather was generally good except in the central area. Raven 51 worked Hobo 21 on a target at YB112726.
Cricket flew 12.3 hours on 6 December [1967] and controlled 238 sorties of which 202 were strike sorties. Cricket arrived on station at 05/2336Z. Weather in the Barrel Roll was 5,000 broken to overcast in B and C Sectors. It was scattered in A Sector. In the afternoon most areas were broken to overcast except where Raven 49 worked the Fireflies.
Metric (2 F-4s) attacked a storage area at XE7500. Firefly 17/18 attacked an ammo storage area at UH939162 and had 13 secondary explosions, 1 large secondary explosion and 2 secondary fires. Raven was the FAC. Blue Boy reported that he was being fired on. Cricket sent Firefly 11/12 but they had negative results due to the weather in the morning hours. [6 December 67]
Cricket flew 12.3 hours on 9 December and handled 199 total sorties of which 143 were strike sorties. RP I was unworkable due to low overcast most of the day. Raven 49 called early and said that Blue Boy was under attack and needed ordinance. [1967]
Raven 49 worked Firefly 19/20 against 350 enemy troops at UH920620. Raven 49 worked Firefly 17/18 against 150 enemy troops at UH900203 and against 25 troops and a gun position at UH841241. Raven 49 worked Firefly 15/16 against 200 enemy troops at UH905199. BDA on the troop positions went unnoticed due to the foliage. Raven 49 said that a ground team would be sent in the next day if possible. [1967]
Hillsboro handled 143 sorties on 14 December. Postscript (2 USMC A-4s) attacked a troop concentration at YD211834. Hobo 33 worked 4 different targets with Raven 51 against enemy troops. Blackjack (2 F-4s) expended at YD142807 by TPQ. Whiskey flight (2 F-4s) attacked a position at XC974495. Covey 239 worked Hammer 21 (2 F-4s) at YC698202 for 2 road cuts. Long Year and Brave Boy SOG operations were canceled due to weather. Life Guard was a successful exfiltration after a Prairie Fire emergency was declared. [1967]
On 14 December Cricket reported that Nail 66 discovered a wood and concrete bridge at WE785131. Cricket sent Lincoln flight to strike the target under Nail 66. Torpedo flight (2 F-4s) interdicted a road at WE882035 with 2 possible secondary explosions. Nail 46 worked Speedo 120 (2 F-4s) on a gun position at WE882035. Raven 49 worked Firefly 17/18 for one secondary explosion. Raven 49 also worked Firefly 19/20 at UH910347 and destroyed 3 trucks. Firefly 19/20 also worked POL and troop positions with 1 secondary fire. [1967]
On 16 December Cricket reported that Misty 21 worked Cobra flight (2 F-4s) and damaged 1 truck at WE820600. Misty 11 worked Redneck flight (2 F-4s) and damaged some rolling stock at WE960905. Raven 49 worked Firefly 15/16 against enemy troops at coordinates UH800271. Raven 49 also worked Firefly 17/18 at UG800221 for 2 secondary fires. [1967]
Cricket received 22 Spotlight reports throughout the day. Neckwear reported waterborne movers at 0245Z. Raven 41 reported 300 enemy troops with one 82mm recoilless rifle and three 37mm guns at TG190442. Raven indicated that the weather was unsuitable for jet aircraft but the target could be struck in the morning since it was stationary. Raven 41 also reported that 200 enemy troops had overrun a friendly position at UG824041. Firefly 17/18 and Firefly 19/20 were sent to Raven Control. The enemy withdrew from the position after overrunning it. [17 December 1967]
Raven 49 worked Firefly 17/18 on trucks at YG025545. Nail 71 and Vespa (F-4) had one road cut at WD943983. Nail 12 and Zorro 19 worked a troop concentration and silenced one 50 cal gun at WE026275. The Fireflies worked all day in Charlie Sector against troops, trucks and guns with Raven 41. Route Pack I was overcast all day with tops at 6,000 and bases at 4,500 feet. Four 37mm gun sites were reported at coordinates WE804389. Lincoln flight attacked the guns and silenced 3 or possibly 4 of them. “Several hundred rounds were fired at the Nail and Lincoln. Nail reported 3 bursts of 37mm through the clouds at Foxtrot, he was unable to pinpoint the position.” Raven 49 commented on the fine work by the Fireflies and the ground teams reported heavy damage to the enemy’s trucks. Gunfighters were scrambled. Five trucks were destroyed and 10 were damaged. There were several secondary explosions and fires along with several road cuts. Covey reported an active 37mm gun at XE801249. Gunfighter silenced 1 gun and started 2 fires. Sullivan flight silenced 2 positions. Raven 71 requested support, which was given by Firefly 17/18. Cream (2 F-4s) was diverted to Cricket by Hillsboro to strike trucks at XE260098. Cream had low fuel so the flight was returned to Hillsboro’s control. [19 December 1967]
Most activity in the Barrel Roll was directed against a target complex uncovered by Raven 49. The target included troops, a 105mm howitzer, 10 trucks and a storage area. “Raven said the Fireflies and strike flights provided good support in the operation and said BDA would be provided after an assessment by ground teams.” [20 December 1967]
Alleycat was advised on the de-brief. Statehouse 01 reported 20 trucks moving west at 1232Z. Blind Bat 02 flared for Halfmoon 02 until Statehouse 01 said no further support was needed. Misty 11 worked Maverick (2 F-4s) against AAA positions. Raven 49 worked Bear (4 F-4s) on troop concentrations at VH768305. [20 December 1967]
Raven 49 worked Cobalt (4 F-4s) against troops, trucks and guns with 1 secondary explosion and 1 secondary fire. Agile attacked four trucks and damaged three. Firefly 15/16 attacked a target at VG106472 and had 2 secondary fires. [20 December 1967]
Raven 49 wasn’t familiar with any friendly troops in the area. The information was passed to Firefly 15/16 but no sighting was made. Nail 20 spotted 1 truck but no ordinance was available. Nail 54 spotted 5 trucks and Sullivan and Locust were sent. Ozark and Iron Hand were sent at 1649. [22 December 1967]
On 24 December Cricket reported that Raven 49 worked Locust at TH614892 against troops, destroying one 12.7mm gun with 7 larges fires and destroying 6 military structures. Nash (4 F-4s) attacked a truck park and storage area at WE793235 and had one road cut. Calico (4 F-4s) attacked the same target at WE795235 with 2 secondary explosions. Falcon (4 F-4s) attacked a truck park and storage area at WE790250 and had 2 secondary explosions. Raven 49 worked Marlin (4 F-105s) at TH655905 and destroyed 5 military structures. Nail 50 worked Speedo (2 F-4s) on a truck park at ZD045832 for 1 secondary explosion. [23 December 1967]
Cricket flew 12.5 hours on 27 December. Weather in Barrel roll was broken to 7/8 overcast in the early hours. Most strikes were put in later as the weather improved to scattered conditions. “The Alpha Force was diverted both AM and PM to Cricket or canceled. Hillsboro reported on 27 December that Raven 73 worked Lovebug (2 F-4s) at XB905228 and had 1 road cut… Raven 75 worked Whiskey 21 (2 F-4cs) for 5 probable KBA at YD235538. Weather in Tiger Hound was good throughout the period. Lifeguard was a successful infiltration. [1967]

ABCCC diverted strike aircraft to Raven 71 and later missions were fragged to support RLA (Royal Lao Army) forces along the Nam Bac and Nam Ou Rivers. [1967]
Most missions fragged to the Barrel Roll in July and August were against truck parks and storage areas. When Operation About Face began most missions were fragged to the Ravens for the support of Gen Vang Pao in his offensive to clear the PDJ. [1969]
On 1 April all jets strikes diverted from the Barrel Roll, five flights worked with Raven 32 on troop positions east of Savannaket. At 0005Z Tiger Mobile was under attack. Cricket diverted strike aircraft and broke the attack. [1969]
Shark damaged 6 boats on 4 April. On 7 April Firefly 20/21 supported Lulu, a ground FAC, with enemy activity. Weather was marginal but Firefly 20/21 worked with Raven 49 and broke the attack as the weather improved… Raven 48 reported a new road extension on Route 4 near UF585965 to UF750890 on 9 April. On 15 April Raven 42 reported TIC at LS-84 and requested ordinance. Cricket diverted four strike flights to the area. Watts and Rainbow reported TIC at UH1938. Two battalions of enemy troops were attacking 200 friendly troops. The refugees were driven back to LS-184. Raven 42 reported that six of seven outposts were lost to the enemy. Raven 42 pinned the enemy down in trenches. [1969]
On 16 April Athens reported that Raven 44 located enemy troops at UF1491. Refugees were being held so no air strikes were possible. Cricket diverted Pickett and Scuba flights for TIC at LS-19. [1969]
On 18 April the Ravens worked strikes in support of TIC at LS-19, LS-32 and LS-184. Lima Site 204 was home to Tiger Mobile. When Cricket came on station on 19 April Spooky 05 advised that Tiger Mobile was under attack and needed assistance. Firefly 20/21 was diverted to Tiger Mobile. Raven 47 made contact with Tiger Mobile and put in Seabird, Dolphin and Muskrat flights. The attacking force withdrew. [1969]
On 20 April PFJ was in danger of being overrun and asked Cricket for air support. Raven 40 was advised to contact this ground party. Mantis was diverted for support. At 0805Z Raven 44 was shot down in the area. It was reported that one wing was shot off and the Raven went in from 3,000 feet. A SAR effort was organized; ground fire was suppressed by Red Dog flight but it was determined that there was no chance of survival. Strike flights were diverted to assist with TIC at LS-184 on 21 April. At 0955Z Watts reported two battalions of enemy troops in contact with 50 friendlies. Raven 42 reported outstanding work by Kingfish and Mallard, who destroyed or damaged 35 buildings in a confirmed PL communications facility and suspected NVA headquarters north of LS-46. [1969]
On 22 April LS-32 was attacked. Cricket diverted Agile to assist. At 0800Z LS-19 was attacked. Six sorties were diverted from Tiger FAC for TIC at that site. Cricket came on station at 2246Z on 23 April to find that LS-32 was under attack from all sides. Jersey 23 was in the Barrel Roll on a weather check and he was diverted to LS-32 until more flights could get in position. Cricket requested Raven 45 to assist and the Raven worked eight flights and by the end of the day LS-32 was secure. Raven 42 reported many enemy bodies in the area. [1969]
On April 25 Rainbow reported LS-184 under heavy attack. Raven was diverted from the PDJ while Cricket obtained three Recce escorts that were returning from RP I. The flights were refueled and attacked their targets. Raven 42 worked Bobbin flight and the enemy broke contact. [1969]
On 1 May LS-19 was under attack when Cricket came on station. Firefly 20/21 was on the scene working with Pogo, a ground FAC. After this single flight all was quiet the rest of the day. Raven 71 worked Goose to destroy an enemy outpost at QC230374. Raven 46 worked multiple strikes against positions near LS-236 and destroyed the emplacement. At the end of the day Raven 46 reported that friendly troops held positions formerly held by the enemy. At 0715Z Raven 48 reported a suspected division headquarters at UG385933. Cricket diverted four flights, which devastated the area. [1969]
On 3 May Raven 48 worked Bison flight in support of LS-01. At 1020Z Watts reported TIC near Rainbow’s area at LS-184. Cricket passed the report on to Alleycat. On 7 May there was activity around Pak Beng and LS-19 which required Tacair. Raven 71 worked 16 jet sorties while friendly forces were in full retreat in the vicinity of Pak Beng. The air support stopped the enemy advance. A total of 53 military structures were destroyed, with 33 major secondary fires, 33 secondary explosions and 3 strong points destroyed. [1969]
Tiger Mobile requested assistance at LS-204 as Cricket came on station on 10 May. The site was under heavy mortar attack. Raven 40 and Falcon 11 worked forty strike flights and the site was quiet the rest of the day. At 2300Z on 11 May a ground FAC reported TIC in the area of Xieng Khouangville. Firefly 20/21 was diverted to support friendlies at UG308402 east of Xieng Khouangville. White Rose, a ground FAC, reported 6 dead and 5 wounded among his casualties. In mid afternoon Raven 43 worked two sorties before he had to return for fuel.
On 12 May at 0610Z Watts reported one enemy company attacking a single friendly platoon at LS-184. Raven 46 arrived on the scene and the enemy broke contact. Lima Site 19 had TIC most of the day. General Vang Pao requested additional ordinance, which was diverted to Raven 45. By nightfall ground action was under control. The next day Raven 43 reported TIC at LS-19. Shortie was diverted and had 40 KBA. [1969]
Most Barrel Roll sorties worked against enemy troop positions near LS-19 on 14 May. Raven observed 84 KBA and 2 guns destroyed. Lima site 108 reported TIC east of the site at 0420Z. [1969]
Raven 46 reported TIC at LS-19 at 0825Z on 15 May. Sorties were diverted by Cricket to silence the mortars. Tiger 02 reported TIC at LS-50 at 1030Z. Shortie was diverted to Tiger 02. The BDA included 3 confirmed KBA and 10 structures were destroyed. On the 16th Raven 71 reported friendly troops were being overrun 50 miles northeast of Luang Prabang. Three flights were sent to Raven. Killer was diverted and destroyed a bulldozer and cut Route 12 in two places at WE581442 with Paveway laser guided bombs. Raven 47 had good BDA with Scotch who destroyed 11 structures and 200 tons of rice. On 18 May TIC was reported at UG020450. General Vang Pao was on scene nearby. Cricket diverted eight fragged flights to the area. Raven 71 reported TIC at LS-54 and used Lao T-28s and all was quiet by 0835Z.
On 20 May Pogo, Blue Moon, White Rose and Red Tiger (all ground FACs) reported TIC. Firefly 20 worked with Pogo and reported 40 KBA. Friendly positions near LS-72 and LS-19 received enemy rounds throughout the day. Raven 01 located a military complex and five flights were diverted. Fifty Seven structures were destroyed. [1969]
Shortie was diverted to LS-19 to work with Raven 42 on 21 May. At 0045Z friendly forces still held LS-19 but the enemy had taken several outposts. At 0945Z Raven 42, 45, 46 and 49 returned to LS-19. The site had TIC again at 1020Z and Alleycat was advised. At 0945Z the next day Raven 45 confirmed that LS-19 was in enemy hands. [1969]
On 22 May at 0220Z Raven 46 reported Xieng Khoangville was in enemy hands. All available air was requested. Five flights were able to get in and work before the weather closed in, which prevented any further strikes. [1969]
Lima Site 184 reported TIC at 0500Z on 28 May. Raven 48 scrambled to assist. Strike flights were diverted and Raven 48 and 43 worked the flights. Lima Site 108 reported TIC at 0530Z. Weather was deteriorating and Firefly 10/11 were diverted. They destroyed 4 bunkers. At 0930Z Raven 45 reported TIC near LS-72. Firefly 11/12 assisted Raven. [1969]
On the 9th Raven 72 requested support for a friendly offensive and Cricket diverted 5 flights. On 10 June Raven 48 reported TIC at LS-184. Goose was diverted and obtained BDA of 6 major secondary explosions, 2 KBA and one gun position destroyed at UH122404… Firefly 20 and 21 reported 10 trucks on Route 7 (Barrel Roll) when Cricket came on station on 11 June. Firefly took a hit as he rolled in to strike the trucks. The weather was marginal at the time. Firefly 21 reported no chute and no beeper. The SAR was terminated at 0010Z. The target that Firefly discovered was attacked throughout the day. Four Fireflies attacked first. Raven FACs worked 16 jet sorties and 36 trucks were destroyed and another 3 were damaged. Sinful recced the area from UG615562 to UG660658. Mantis struck a cave storage area at UG086475 and set off a POL fire that burned for 6 hours. Raven 45 reported TIC at LS-236 and LS-184. The TICs were supported by air strikes. On 12 June Lima Site 196 reported TIC at 0800Z. Raven 45 worked Machette who destroyed 8 bunkers and had 15 KBA. [June 1969]
On 15 June Watts, a ground FAC, declared TIC at UG349721 and requested support. Firefly 44, 45, 46 and 47 assisted Watts. At 1005Z Raven 46 reported TIC at L108. “An estimated 150 PL in 3 ground positions were firing automatic weapons and mortars at friendly positions. Goose, Shark, Ozark and Calico were diverted to the scene as Alleycat assumed station.” On the 16th Raven 46 reported TIC at LS-11. On the 19th Pogo had TIC all day. It was first reported by Alleycat at UG0236 andTG9839. Hunter, a ground FAC, reported incoming rounds at UG070462 and UG 030402. Firefly 42 and 43 struck and had 90 KBA at UG065388 and 50 pack animals killed at UG055388. [1969]
On 21 June Raven 46 reported TIC at UG5300. Cactus and Ozark were diverted from Steel Tiger North against two battalions of the enemy in the vicinity of LS-11. On the 23rd Barrel Roll sorties were diverted against enemy troops near LS-108, east of LS-219 and LS-11. [1969]
On 30 June Raven 71 worked 10 sorties in the Pak Beng area and destroyed 75 structures with 48 secondary fires and 6 large secondary explosions. The Southwest Monsoon season had its effect on Cricket’s operations. [1969]
On 1 July Hot Rod destroyed six structures, four trucks and damaged twelve structures. On the 2nd Oakland destroyed 2 bunkers, 2 structures, damaged 5 structures, 3 KBA, 3 medium secondary fires and 400 medium secondary explosions. At 0745Z Raven 71 reported TIC at LS-186. Goose and Firefly 36/37 were diverted to Raven. On the 2nd six missions were used to support Lima 108. At 0445Z Raven was approved for support for a TIC within the prohibited area of Luang Prabang. TIC was reported at LS-26 and Raven was investigating as Alleycat came on station. On 3 July “All fragged sorties were able to expend under Raven control after 0200Z at Lima 108, LS-182 and in the Nam Ou river area with Raven 72. No TIC.” [1969]
On the 5th Quiet Man reported TIC at TG618487. Four strike flights were sent to Quiet Man and the contact was broken. Raven 40 reported that LS-38 had fallen to the enemy at 1050Z. “Unconfirmed reports indicated several thousand NVN troops were reported at TG9050, while strikes in the area during the day confirmed the presence of many enemy troops.” [July 1969]
Ravens were supported at Lima and STOL sites throughout the Barrel Roll on 6 July. Firefly 20/21 silenced a mortar at TG630480 and Firefly 22/23 silenced one at TG692514. Cadillac destroyed a rocket position at TG690512. Goose destroyed a gun and had 3 KBA at TG92505. Raven 38 reported TIC at 0540Z at Quiet Man’s location. Raven 40 reported on Lima Sites as of 0900Z:
LS-38 - east half friendly, west half unfriendly, but the airstrip was no-man’s land

At 0600Z Raven 49 reported TIC in the LS-46 area. Hobo 34/35 destroyed 10 bunkers, 30 meters of trench and had 4 KBA. Zorro 50/51 followed with 10 bunkers and 40 meters of trench destroyed. “The support of these two strikes resulted in the friendly force establishing a position 100 feet from the runway at LS-36.” [7 July 1969]
Oakland destroyed one truck and one gun position and had 3 large secondary explosions at UG159526 on 9 July. Oakland also destroyed a bridge at UG110515, had 9 structures destroyed, 4 damaged, 5 medium secondary fires, 2 large ammo secondary explosions (at UG165539), 2 large secondary explosions, one gun position destroyed and 1 cave destroyed at UG066493. Ravens 45 and 21 reported TIC at Quiet Man and Pogo’s locations. Air support was sent to both TICs. [1969]
… The Ravens worked Firefly 22/23, Cadillac and Kingfish and contact was broken when Kingfish delivered his ordinance. At 0900Z TIC was declared at LS-72 involving heavy gun fire on friendly positions. Raven 49 worked Caroline, Buick, Mallard and Vampire in repelling the attack. LS-72 was still under fire when Cricket departed station. Firefly 40/41 was credited with 50 KBA at LS-02. Shamrock reported TIC. Air support was given and all was quiet by 0500Z. [14 July 1969]
On the 21st Ravens worked all their fragged missions concentrating 54 strikes at the Lima 108 area and 16 sorties at the Nam Ou River. Metric had 35 secondary explosions and 11 KBA at Lima 108. [July 1969]
… Red Hat reported incoming at 0640Z on the 29th. Raven 47 worked Hobo 26 and 27 in the vicinity of LS-02 at UG488488. [July 1969]
Pogo reported that he lost an outpost during the night of the 3rd. Pogo and Raven worked seven flights of slow movers and they were asking for more as Cricket departed station. Enemy troops were massing in the hills waiting to attack LS-41. [3 August 1969]
On the 5th the Ravens worked with Pogo all day against enemy troop concentrations with good BDA. On the 6th Pogo reported LS-41 and LS-38 in friendly hands. [August 1969]
On the 15th Raven 01 worked with Peacock at LS-249 to break up a TIC involving a battalion of NVA. On the 16th “Raven 70 did his usual good work in Raven North area and reported getting a secondary explosion with one of his marking rockets.” Firefly 30/31, Hobo 14/15 and Cactus supported Pogo by striking the enemy in caves and structures… [August 1969]
On 17 August Rustic destroyed 2 sampans at TH583921. Oakland followed up and destroyed 1 sampan, 2 structures and had 2 secondary fires. Firefly also destroyed 4 structures at the same coordinates. “Ravens worked strikes all day in support of Operation About Face and supported preparation for ground troops assault on a high point.” On the 18th Raven 40 reported troop concentrations at UG305715. Pancho and Hobo worked in support and they destroyed 50 meters of trench and 3 bunkers. On the 19th Raven FACs worked strikes against troop concentrations near LS-260 and north of LS-02 (Operation About Face). Raven 44 reported caves closed by Shark at UG579741, which contained a 37mm AAA on tracks. [1969]
On the 22nd Hobo 14/15 destroyed one truck with two secondary fires at TG81326220. Black Lion reported TIC and five missions were diverted to assist him. Blue Moon had TIC at LS-57 at 0300Z. Firefly 26/27 worked with Raven 44 at TG713688. By 0900Z all was quiet. LS-102 reported heavy TIC at 0250Z. Raven 41 worked Bison and Pintail in support of LS-102 and all was quiet at 0300Z. Black Lion reported TIC at 0700Z. Raven 40 worked Lobo 12/13 and contact was broken by 0730Z. [August 1969]
On the 24th Muskrat destroyed one radio transmitter at VH19096245 and Bass destroyed one at VH200630. Oakland silenced a 12.7mm gun at TH496774. Pancho also destroyed a 12.7mm gun at TG997306. Black Lion reported TIC at 0910Z at UG45707. Raven 41 verified the TIC and Raven 47 worked No Trump, Bison and Soccer. Raven 47 confirmed TIC at Lulu at 1000Z. [August 1969]
… Raven worked Pistol at UG001305 destroying two large bunkers and had 50 KBA. No TICs were reported but support was needed in the vicinity of Lulu, Hilltop, Red Tiger and Black Lion … [25 August 1969]
… On 31 August Raven 40 reported TIC at LS-02 at 0232Z. Raven 42 advised that contact was broken and the enemy was on the run at 0410Z. [1969]
On 1 September troop concentrations were reported near LS-219. Raven 40 worked 2 flights in support; no results were observed. Swamp Rat reported TIC near LS-01 at 0910Z. Raven 40 worked 2 flights in support. Hobo 24/25 destroyed two trucks, one tractor truck, one POL dump and three structures with one large secondary explosion and fifteen medium secondary fires at UG270629.
On the 2nd the Ravens reported two TICs which were broken. Raven 40 reported TIC in the vicinity of Black Lion at 1015Z. TIC was still in progress when Cricket left station … [1969]
Red Tiger reported incoming rounds at 0955Z on the 6th. Raven 40 assisted Red Tiger. Raven 74 was working north of Luang Prabang with Scotch and received outstanding BDA. [September 1969]
On 7 September no TICs were reported. Ravens worked with Red Tiger, Lulu and Black Lion against troop concentrations and enemy assaults. [1969]
Raven 45 reported TIC at Black Lion’s position at 0930Z on 8 September. Cricket diverted Strike flights, which were working when Cricket left station. Metric destroyed 40 structures with 29 secondary fires and one large secondary explosion. Muskrat destroyed 2 trucks with 20 medium secondary explosions and 50 KBA at UG262621 on 9 September. On the 10th Black Lion reported TIC. Cricket diverted strike flights to the Ravens in support of Black Lion at UG4069. [1969]
Raven 72 directed 8 flights involving 31 strike aircraft on the 12th in the Nam Ou River area. Raven 47 reported a battalion sized troop concentration at TG950531 as Cricket was leaving station. Raven 47 directed strikes by Scotch, Scuba, Red Dog and Zorro 50/51. On the 13th Poppy at TG9748 and White Rose at UG0757 were in a TIC situation when Cricket came on station. Raven 48 worked Firefly 20/21 and Detroit in support of Poppy. Lulu reported TIC which was broken by Raven 42 and two strike flights. The rest of the missions fragged to the Ravens were used against targets in the northern part of the PDJ. [1969]
On the 16th Blue Moon reported TIC at 0800Z near LS-57. Raven FACs directed strikes and the TIC was broken at 0900Z. Firefly 30/31 assisted Raven 45 with a med-evac from Red Hat’s position … [September 1969]
Raven 47 directed Brocker and No Trump in support as Cricket departed station. Pistol destroyed two 12.7mm guns and damaged two more at UG76885920. Hobo 12/13 had 100 KBA at TG785645. Panda destroyed 1 truck at UG933554 … [September 1969]
Blue Moon had TIC near LS-108 on 24 September. Three flights of Fireflies were sent to his support. Enemy troop concentrations were reported by Peacock at LS-06, Pogo, and Kingpin at LS-196, Yellow Dog and Hot Plate near Ban Ban. The Ravens worked strike flights in support of these FAGs. On the 25th Black Lion and Pogo reported TIC and they were supported by Fireflies. The Ravens also worked strikes in these areas. [1969]
Cricket operations were affected by low fog and stratus clouds during the early morning hours during October. The weather also delayed departures for the Ravens from home base. Tiger 01/02 and Laredo 01/02 and the Ravens continued to do excellent work supporting the strike flights, often in marginal weather. Due to the poor weather in MR II many strike flights were diverted to the Ravens above Luang Prabang with excellent BDA. [October 1969]
On 4 October Rocket Mobile had TIC twice during the morning. Firefly 26/27 and Firefly 30/31 broke the enemy contact. Blue Moon had TIC in the morning. He was supported by Firefly 22/23 and Boswell under Raven 43’s control. Hunter reported incoming rounds as Cricket left station. Calico destroyed a truck at UG664215 and Shako destroyed a truck at UG830572. White Rose was in contact as Cricket arrived on station on 5 October. Ravens confirmed TIC at Red Tiger’s position. Black Lion, Pogo, Blue Moon and Lulu reported troop concentrations. Peacock reported TIC at 2310Z on the 6th. Firefly 20/21 and Firefly 22/23 worked the target and everything was quiet by 0130Z. Lobo (UG632361) reported TIC and he was supported by Raven 47, Vampire and Rustic. [1969]
Pogo and Red Tiger reported TIC which was broken by Raven 40 and 43 working slow movers. Enemy targets at Lulu, Kneecap and Lobo’s positions were passed to Alleycat as Cricket left station on the 8th. At 2330Z on 9 October Pogo reported TIC. Firefly 24/25 and Temple struck troop concentrations at Pogo’s position. Raven 40 worked Temple in support and the TIC was broken by 0320Z. Black Lion reported TIC at 0200Z. Raven 44 worked Cookie in support and contact was broken at 0500Z. [October 1969]
Raven 22 reported TIC at UG059629 at 0920Z on 10 October. Raven 22 worked Newark and Zorro 52/53 and all was quiet when Cricket left station. Waco destroyed a truck at UG723678. [1969]

On 15 October Pogo reported TIC at 0820Z, Black Lion at 0810Z, Lulu at 0820Z and Blue Moon at 0840Z. Lima 22 (Lima Lima UG0552) had 6 incoming mortar rounds at 0820Z. Raven 46 reported all quiet at 1000Z. [1969]
On the 16th Shamrock, Lulu, Red Tiger and White Rose reported TIC. Most of the TICs were incoming mortar rounds and contact was quickly broken with air support. White Tiger reported TIC and had three WIA. Raven 21 and Firefly 32/33 gave him air support. The enemy stayed in the area and as night came on White Tiger requested a Spooky gunship. Raven 21 supervised the evacuation of White Tiger’s wounded. White Tiger expects more contact tonight … [October 1969]
Shamrock was in contact when Cricket came on station on 17 October. His position was quiet by 0105Z. Poppy reported TIC at 0830Z. Raven 43 worked Zorro 66/67 and all was quiet when Cricket left orbit … On the 21st Shamrock and Black Lion reported TPC, which was broken by strike flights under Raven control. [1969]
Black Lion declared TIC at 0120Z on the 25th. Raven 48 was sent to the area but he was unable to contact Black Lion due to radio problems. Hobo 10/11 arrived on the scene at 0245Z and reported that the TIC had been broken at 0420Z. Raven 46 worked Muskrat and Hobo 10/11 to break the TIC. Raven 48 worked Roman in support of TIC at Blue Moon’s position. Cactus destroyed 2 trucks at UG728677. Otter destroyed a truck at UG732678 and damaged 1 truck at UG728677. Athens reported that Blue Moon had TIC at 0350Z on the 26th. Raven 42 contacted him at 0355Z and the contact had been broken. [October 1969]
As Cricket came on station on the 28th Alleycat advised that Red Tiger had TIC. Cricket was unable to contact him and at 0000Z Poppy reported that “Red Tiger’s situation was terminated at this time.” Poppy reported that Red Tiger had many troop concentrations in his area. Raven 45 finally contacted Red Tiger at 0017Z and Firefly 20/21 made contact at 0150Z. Weather was unworkable. Poppy reported that Rocket Mobile lost his position during the night and that Rocket Mobile was now located 3 kilometers northwest of UG5340. Rocket Mobile confirmed his new position. Firefly 24 and 25 were unable to support Rocket Mobile due to the weather. Black Lion reported TIC at 0625Z. Raven 44 and Zorro 52/53 arrived at Black Lion’s position and silenced one 82mm mortar. TIC was broken at 0735Z. Zorro 54/55 destroyed a truck at TG998648. [October 1969]
Weather was marginal most of the month, which lowered the monthly BDA. The ground situation in MR II continued to deteriorate and by the 18th LS-20 was considered unfriendly and LS-98 was evacuated by American personnel. “After the 18th Ravens were stationed at L-08 and refueled for operations at LS-98, thusly, Long Tieng (LS-98) was turned into a forward operating base.” [March 1969]
The weather was poor throughout the entire period and night operations were severely effected. In April Alleycat was instrumental in the SAR effort for Raven 48 and on another night relayed rescue information to the “SHEP” ground party of an Air America C-130. On 1 May Alleycat assisted Raven 20, who recovered at Channel 70. [1970]
In April four USAF aircraft went down in the day Barrel Roll area. Four crewmen were recovered but three are MIA. Falcon 75 went down on 22 April and both men were picked up the next day. Raven 50, with Raven in the back seat, went down on 24 April; both pilots are MIA. In May three aircraft were downed and all five pilots were rescued by Air America. [1970]
Nail 38 and Spud 22 reported a beeper. The beeper belonged to a Raven that lost his radios. “Through the coordinated efforts of Nail 38, Spud 22, Alleycat, Ethan 03 and Brigham, Raven 12 landed safely at Channel 70.” [May 1970]
Hillsboro flew 13 hours on 2 May. The weather in Steel Tiger was marginal all day. Raven 41 reported a regiment size force of the enemy in the Delta Seven area. The enemy was attempting to overrun an outpost. “Fast and slow movers were diverted to Raven for support.” [1970]
Cricket controlled 22 strike aircraft on 3 May. Most strike missions for Barrel Roll were canceled for the day. One of the Ravens reported that Poppy abandoned his position. Current location is unknown. [1970]
The majority of the Raven flights were in support of Black Lion. Black Lion had TIC all day but air support was adequate … Alleycat reported that the anticipated attack around Showboat’s position did not materialize while cricket was on station. One Raven did receive ground fire near his position. [5 May 1970]
Cricket flew 12.7 hours on 6 May. Changing weather conditions in the Barrel Roll created some problems in supporting troop concentrations reported by Peacock and Showboat. Fast movers were able to expend visually on all but 4 missions. Mad Man was fragged to the Ravens, but could not expend due to weather, so he expended against a lucrative target working with Tiger. All other flights fragged to the Ravens were used in support of Showboat and Peacock. The close proximity of enemy troops to Showboat’s position restricted the fast movers to strafing passes only. The Ravens were fragged for 8 missions (26 sorties) and by the end of the day they worked 10 missions (36 sorties). [1970]
The Ravens primarily supported Showboat and Peacock’s positions against heavy troop concentrations. Raven FACs were fragged with 32 strike sorties and 28 were supported. Four sorties were diverted to Laredo 07 to support a more lucrative target. [7 May 1970]
Air America stated that LS-33 and all surrounding friendly positions were overrun. An unknown number of refugees were captured by the enemy. Rainbow was proceeding south. Apparently he abandoned his outpost last night. Cricket never established radio contact. Watts reported intermittent contact throughout the day. Tiger 01 was hit in the LS-32 area by 12.7mm gun fire and both crewmembers ejected. The crew was picked up by Air America helicopters 76 Hotel and 96 Whiskey. Both men were in good condition. Air America 96 Whiskey was hit by small arms fire and one of its crewmembers was hit in the shoulder. Raven 22 was the on-scene SAR commander. A RLAF T-28 reported that he spotted supplies in the open and “live” trucks parked next to “dead” trucks in a attempt at camouflage. He also spotted fresh trails in and out of the area and he requested additional ordinance at first light on the 8th.
Some details came in about the loss of LS-33. After three hours of severe TIC Rainbow abandoned his position and began a retreat to LS-50 (Slingshot).Rainbow was traveling with an untuneable radio set. Aircraft must be directly overhead to receive his positions. At 1700 local the Ravens reported NVA in green uniforms walking around in Rainbow’s old position. Bucket flight was put in with an unknown number of KBA. [May 1970]
On the 7th Hillsboro reported that “Prairie Fire was moderate today with one emergency; Dog Days being exfilled after suffering one KIA and one WIA. Hip Shot and Spin Down were also taken out.” The remaining NBLs are: Special “Alfa”, Golf 3 Radio Relay, Hay Eater, Black Night and State House. The loss of friendly positions at XB875455 was reported during the night. Raven 44 and Covey directed strikes in the area. [May 1970]
Six A-1 sorties returning from escort duty expended on Barrel Roll targets. Ravens were fragged for 34 sorties and worked 60. “Raven 28 deserves special mention for his fine work and cooperation.” [10 May 1970]
Showboat (LS-32) reported a short TIC during the morning hours. Showboat was supported throughout the day by strike fighters. Ravens were fragged for 42 sorties and worked 40. All recce missions were successful. Knee Cap reported his position at UF1393. A Raven reported a large object at TG473317 on 10 May. Tiger 01 worked the coordinates on 11 May with negative results. He did report that the road showed heavy use and a number of boats were spotted in the river. [10 May 1970]
… The Ravens were fragged for 24 sorties and worked 28 … “Raven 26 reported seeing two air bursts of white phosphorous type warheads over a position north of Wildcat. The bursts were at 8,300 MSL (mean sea level) and the contrail of the rocket came out of a cloud to the east of the burst.” Black Lion (TG7927) reported to Raven 28 that patrols from his outposts (TG759299) (TG773860) saw two platoons of enemy troops carrying 122mm rockets. By the time it was reported to Raven and Cricket the enemy had moved on. Lulu reported a 12.7mm gun position at UF1395. Kneecap reported his position at UF1395. [13 May 1970]

… Raven 23 lost power and hit a ridge line at TG905278 on 9 September. Both Raven 23 and his back-seater were recovered without incident. [1970]
… At 1835Z Stinger 24 provided flares as needed by Gold-86 and Raven Ground Control … At 1935Z Raven Control released Stinger 24 to go truck hunting since he was out of flares and there were no targets to strike. Alleycat advised Raven that a Spooky was being launched from L-08 (Vientiane) … At 2050Z Stinger 24 checked out without firing. Spooky 55 checked in at 2041Z and Raven advised him to hold at LS-20 while Candlestick flared in support. At 2045Z Raven Control reported that he was taking incoming fire from recoilless rifles and 82mm mortars. Raven requested immediate Spooky support. Spooky 55 started working with Raven at 2105Z. Raven directed the gunship by reference to the enemy fire and friendly tracer rounds directed at the enemy. Candlestick 32 moved 10 miles north to be clear of Spooky. Raven requested more ordinance and Blue Chip offered some jets but Raven said he could not work fast movers. [12 February 1970]
One truck was destroyed and none were damaged on 21 March. Weather was good all night. Five RLAF Spooky gunships were diverted to the defense of Luang Prabang. Falcon 55 destroyed 40 bunkers and small arms ammunition that produced 2 large secondary explosions and 32 small secondary explosions. Raven 26 said that it was “the best F-4 bombing he had ever seen.” [1970]
Weather was unworkable during the early hours of 2 January but it improved in the PDJ area by early afternoon. Tiger 02 went down near the highway 7/71 split at 0800Z. Raven 26 and the reconnaissance aircraft Bullwhip established contact with both crewmembers. At 1115Z the on-scene commander King told both men to remain hidden until morning. Three trucks were destroyed and 3 were damaged on 3 January. The SAR operation to recover Tiger 02 began early. King made Raven 26 the on-scene commander. The Raven worked Miller (F-4) under a low deck of clouds “in tight quarters in an outstanding display of professional skill.” The Raven worked Ram, Papa and Dandy 3 and 4 before returning to base for fuel. Raven 22 and Nail 33 secured the area with Cobra, Gasser, Sandy and Lotto. Jolly 63 picked up both crewmembers at UG352661. Quiet Man reported a brief TIC involving 82mm mortar fire on his position. Nail 11 and Raven 22 exploited a lucrative target. At least 17 trucks were spotted in the area. [1971]
… Weather was excellent on 16 January. Wildcat reported TIC. Raven 51, flying an O-1, had an engine failure due to complete loss of oil at 0145Z. Raven made for an open field and made a successful emergency landing at UF833500. He was picked up at 0230Z by an Air America helicopter. [1971]
… Raven 23 located a supply area which yielded excellent BDA after it was attacked. [21 January 1971]
… All strike sorties were canceled on 30 January. Weather in Barrel Roll was poor. Raven 12 was hit by ground fire at 0902Z. He was able to return to Luang Prabang. [1971]

… Weather in the Barrel Roll was workable for visual flights most of the day on 8 February. Raven 25 was forced to bail out of his aircraft in the middle of a strike mission. He was rescued 24 minutes later by Air America helicopter 96W. [1971]
… All fragged strike sorties plus 18 QRF flights (six were slow movers) were used in the Barrel Roll in good weather. Raven 22 was downed by ground fire at TG9245 and died in the crash. The TICs were concentrated around Ban Na (LS-15). [11 February 1971]
… Weather in Barrel Roll was marginal for F-4s on 14 February. Long Tieng (LS-20A) was under attack when Cricket came on station. Killer flight expended ordinance with Raven Control marking the target from his position on the ground. “Considerable difficulty was experienced in establishing radio contact with Killer flight. After approximately 20 minutes radio contact was made on frequency 282.8. Killer asked Raven Control if they knew what type ordinance Killer was carrying. Killer then told Raven Control that he had CBU-24 and CBU-49. He asked Raven Control if he should drop. The next transmission from Raven Control was garbled and Killer answered, “Understand; I am cleared to drop.” Raven Control said “Negative.” Killer replied, “Understand; I am cleared to drop.” Raven Control replied, “Charlie, Charlie.” The first pass missed the mark that Raven Control provided. On 6 March the weather was good all day. The Ravens directed 28 air strikes in support of ground forces. When Cricket came on station Hot dog had troops in contact. No support was available at the time and Cricket was unable to make radio contact. Shamrock received incoming at 0350Z. At 0930Z Shamrock called a short round (MK-82) on Iceman. Raven 20 was the FAC. Raven understood that the smoke marker was good and confirmed. Strikes were halted immediately. [1971]
… An RLAF T-28 (Tlaophakhao) was shot down and killed at coordinates TG895225. Weather precluded visual strikes on 19 March. Skyspot delivery techniques were used. Raven 26 reported that enemy rounds were impacting LS-20A at 0216Z. Shamrock reported 82mm mortar fire at 0605Z. [18 March 1971]

On 7 March ten trucks were destroyed and nine were damaged. Weather was good all day. There were six reports of troops in contact. Raven 41 had an engine failure in southern Steel Tiger and bailed out successfully. He was picked up quickly by Jolly Green. [1971]
… As Moonbeam assumed station Raven 42 was requesting ordinance for two enemy tanks at XB217798. At 1055Z Raven 42 was shot down by a 12.7 mm gun and crash landed at 050/25/82. Rocket Mobile reported a probing attack and an attack by fire at LS-61. Raven 51 provided support. Thunder FSB reported an ABF. Raven 24 spotted for the counter-fire from Thunder. Cobra FSB received 12 rounds of 82mm fire. Raven 25 supported. Cricket left the Barrel Roll twice due to MiG calls. [1972]
… On the 2nd Wild Bill reported an attack by fire, which was supported by Raven 24. Peacock also reported an ABF that Raven 27 supported … Wild Bill reported an ABF on the 4th. Raven 22 and Thunder FSB supported him. An Air America Caribou (C-7) crashed while attempting to land at LS-14. [2 February 1972]
Peacock, Bad Man and Wild Bill reported ABFs on 7 February. Peacock received three assaults throughout the day. Raven 22 and 28 supported him. Raven 22 also supported an attack on LS-05. “At 0930Z Blue Chip advised Cricket of a possible camouflaged missile transporter in the vicinity of UG271599. Nail 47 [visually checked] the area, however, heavy canopy and dark shadows precluded effective coverage.” On 8 February at 0225Z Cricket received a report that an 0-1 aircraft was burning southeast of the runway at LS-44. Raven 51 and Air America investigated and confirmed that Raven 21 (aircraft #897) had indeed crashed. Both crewmembers were killed. Thudbuster reported a ground assault on one of his outposts. His forces had to abandon the position (UF725812). Raven 53 supported the defenders. Thudbuster also reported an ABF on his position. Whiskey 01 reported sporadic assaults throughout the morning as well as a ground assault on the CD Pad. Raven 20 and 22 supported Whiskey 01. No friendly positions were lost. [1972]

Showboat was supported by Raven 27, 21, 25 and 28. Hammer, Lulu, Slingshot, Pressure and Hot Plate all reported incoming fire. Spotlight and Gumdrop reported incoming fire on 4 March. Raven 27, 24 and 26 supported the friendly positions. The weather in Barrel Roll was unworkable in all areas until 0400Z. Cricket assumed the Green orbit from Hillsboro from 2244Z until 2317Z. [1972]
… Slingshot reported that one of his patrols had a short fight on the 8th. Lulu and Crowbar were receiving incoming fire as Cricket departed the orbit. Weather in Barrel Roll was unsuitable for fast moving aircraft all day. Raven 27 took a 12.7mm hit while flying over TG8623. The pilot was able to land safely at 20 Alternate without injury. On the 11th Butterfly reported a ground assault and incoming fire on two of his outposts. Nail19 and Raven 22 supported the friendlies, but both friendly positions were lost. Weather precluded visual strikes all day … Raven 23 and Sandy 03 were both hit by ground fire and returned to base safely. [11 March 1972]
Wild Bill reported a ground assault with incoming fire on 12 March. Raven 29 supported Wild Bill’s position. Butterfly also reported a ground assault on one of his outposts, which Raven 27 supported. Spotlight, Bum Steer and LS-20A reported incoming fire. Raven 24, Raven 23 and Tiger FSB supported Spotlight. Raven 29 supported Bum Steer. The LS-20A (Long Tieng) ammo dump was hit by incoming fire. There were numerous secondary explosions. Raven 29 supported an assault on the CC Pad on Skyline Ridge north of LS-20A. As Alleycat assumed orbit, Lonestar reported incoming fire. “The weather was unworkable for [visual] strikes [by] fast movers after 0230Z and for slow movers after 0330Z.” [1972]
… On 29 March Cowhide, Tiger Mobile, Lulu 01 and Hammer reported TIC with incoming fire. Raven 24, 22 and RLAF T-28s provided support. Raven 21 supported Cowhide. Raven 27 and Hobo 24 supported Lulu 01. LS-20A had heavy incoming fire. Raven 24 and Stinger 21 supported the site. Weather hampered air operations all day. [1972]
… On 31 March Cowhide (CT Pad), Wildcat and Booster reported TIC and incoming fire. Raven 27, 22, and 23 along with RLAF T-28s and Hobo 24/25 provided support. LS-20A also reported incoming fire, which was supported by Venus FSB. Friendly troops now control the CC and CG Pads on Skyline Ridge above LS-20A. Weather continued to restrict air operations today. On 14 January the weather was unworkable in all areas. “One Nine Bravo India reported a TIC at 2350Z and received support from Spooky 370. Ma Bien and Flying Horse reported a TIC at 0725Z and received support from Raven 41 and Navy fast movers.” [1972]

… On 21 January Raven 44 and Raven 45 found numerous trucks in the vicinity of XC5445. Twenty four were destroyed and 2 were damaged. Weather was workable except along the eastern ridges. On the 22nd the weather was workable except along the eastern ridges. There was no significant ground action. Six trucks were destroyed. On the 23rd the weather was workable in all areas. Blue Man reported a TIC at 0600Z. Raven 31 and RLAF T-28s supported Blue Man. “AT 0810Z, Team 0-8 (WD308294) reported a TIC. Enemy forces were chasing the friendlies from a village. Raven 31 expended RLAF T-28s, USAF A-1s and fast movers in support.” [1972]
… Space reported an attack by fire at 0050Z. Space received incoming 122mm fire throughout the despite support from Raven 43. Raven 31 reported a TIC at Brown Man’s position at 0304Z. “A village at WD279667 was hit by mortar fire. Raven 30 chased the enemy forces away, but the village was left burning.” Four trucks were destroyed and 7 were damaged. [27 January 1972]
When Hillsboro arrived on station on the 2nd Brown Man (WD399354) had a TIC. Raven 33 reported that the weather near Brown Man was unworkable for fast movers. When the weather cleared Raven 33 worked RLAF T-28s against enemy troop concentrations in the area. [2 February 1972]
At 2345Z on 3 February Counter reported that his position was surrounded by the enemy. Raven 40 flew in support but the weather was unworkable for strike flights. Raven 40 also supported Team 67 during a TIC at XB114772. [1972]
Blue Man (WD3647) reported a TIC at 0443Z on 6 February. Raven 32 supported him at his position. Friendly casualties were evacuated by helicopter later in the day … [1972]

On 10 February Team BG-304 (WD3235) reported a TIC, which was supported by Raven 30. “He reported a platoon size force of enemy forces in the area. Six tanks were reported to be in the Dong Hene area.” There was no BDA to report for the day… On the 14th Brown Man declared a TIC, which was supported by Raven 33 and RLAF T-28s. BDA was negative. … At 2000Z Hudson Bay reported a TIC. He reported that he was withdrawing from WD278553 to WD235559. Raven 33 and RLAF T-28s supported his withdrawal. Dirty Man reported a TIC and he withdrew to WD260444. Brown Man received support for his TIC from Raven 33. “Casualties from this action were evacuated by helicopter.” [16 February 1972]
… On 19 February at 2310Z Green Lion reported a TIC and he was supported by Raven 33. At 0705Z Brown Man reported a TIC and he was supported by Raven 32. Fifteen trucks were destroyed and 15 were damaged. There were no reports of ground activity on the 20th. Twenty eight trucks were destroyed and 17 were damaged. On 22 February Raven 30, Raven 32 and RLAF T-28s flew cover for the evacuation of casualties from WD3443. Three trucks were destroyed and 12 were damaged. On the 23rd Young Man reported a TIC and received support from Raven 33 and Lao T-28s. At 0930Z on the 24th Young Man evacuated his casualties from WD274458. On 3 March Black Ant (WC876217) reported a TIC which began at 2315Z and ended at 0030Z. Raven 45 and Lao T-28s supported him. Raven 45 worked a flight of Lao T-28s on 50 enemy troops in the open, near the Keng Nlao area … [1972]
… BC-201 (WD295244) had incoming from a position at WD272289. Raven 40 supported the friendly position with RLAF T-28s and US fast movers. A TIC in Khong Se Done was supported by Raven 42 and 45 with US jets and Lao T-28s. Counter had TIC AT 1000Z, which was supported by Raven 45 and fast movers. “Counter reports that his position is critical and expecting attacks by tanks soon.” Ten trucks were destroyed and 4 were damaged during this period. … Commando Raider (WD265425) had TIC at 0105Z. He was supported by Raven 30 and Lao T-28s. The enemy strength was estimated at two platoons. At 0930Z BC-201 reported TIC at WD363297. Raven 33 flew in support. Black Bat declared TIC at Klick 18 from 0915Z until 0935Z. The enemy was estimated at platoon strength. Raven 40 worked Lao T-28s to suppress an ABF at XB0595. On the 21st Young Man had a TIC at Commando Raider’s position at WD280429. Raven 30 broke the TIC with Lao T-28s at 0230Z. Four trucks were destroyed and 1 was damaged. [March 1972]
The weather was marginal with cloud and visibility restrictions on the 22nd. “Many strikes were diverted …” BC-201 had a TIC at WD312350 at 0315Z. He also reported TICs at WD329347 from 0335Z until 0400Z. Raven 30 supported them with T-28s. Jungle Lion and Han Souk also reported TICs. Two trucks were destroyed and 2 were damaged. [March 1972]
… On 24 March Raven 41 declared an emergency at 0958Z. Bulldog gave his general position at WB9778 on the east side of the mountain. Both crewmembers were picked up by H45 (Air America). Raven 41 had engine failure. [24 March 1972]
… Blue Man, Red Man and Young Man all experienced TICs on 25 March. All three friendlies were in the same general area at WD285425. The TICs began at 2145Z and ended at 0700Z. The friendlies moved west while Raven 33 supported them. [1972]
… On 30 March Team 19-BI had TIC, which was supported by Spooky 133 when Hillsboro arrived on station. “Reported 5 KIA and 22 WIA from night’s activities.” The Ravens worked the area around 19-BI all day. The area was quiet throughout the period. By the time the first Raven arrived on the scene, the enemy had broken contact and withdrawn … [1972]
… On 31 March the SAR for Spectre 22 was concluded at 0230Z. All fifteen crewmembers were picked up. The Jolly Greens picked up thirteen and Air America picked up the other two. There were no serious injuries reported. “During Moonbeam’s time frame, area denial munitions validation for a 10 nm radius around XC5729 and XC8022 was given. Both CBU and BLU-52 were utilized during [the] SAR within designated area. Nail 18 was on-scene commander, however, Raven 40 personally spotted and supported 10 of the survivors and did an outstanding job in the rescue effort.” Cosmic 16 reported a SAM launch at XC9505. … The weather was intermittently workable in Steel Tiger on 23 February. Raven 32 supported TPC/TIC at WD275431. [1972]
… On 18 March an FAR company at LS-159 was attacked by accompany of NVA. Seven friendlies were wounded. The enemy withdrew and occupied a local village. Later a Raven FAC saw the enemy in village. They were stopping civilian vehicles and forcing the occupants into the village. Raven flew over the village throughout the day and saw no sign that the enemy was leaving. Friendly troops were brought in and with Raven 40 overhead and T-28s circling, contact was made. The ground troops requested air strikes, which Raven 40 could not approve. The commanding general of MR IV ordered the T-28s to strike anyway. Raven 40 briefed the T-28 crews on where the friendlies and the enemy were located in the village. The village was struck and the ground teams linked up on the east side of the village. The NVA showed no signs of leaving. The NVA slipped out during the night leaving 30 dead in the village. [1972]
… Raven FACs directed numerous air strikes on 19 April against a large storage area about 14 kilometers north of Lao Ngam. “Raven 41 said the strikes triggered the largest secondary explosion he had ever seen in MR IV.” More than 30 trucks were destroyed by ambush teams on the ground. [1971]
